No single party will obtain an absolute majority in Sri Lanka's parliamentary elections, but the opposition alliance will have a better chance to form a government, an independent web site run by Sri Lankan political analysts said Thursday. Lacnet said its projection was based on the votes counted so far, the proportional representation for the 225 seats.
It said the main opposition United National Party will get on 104 seats on its own. The United Party's alliance partners will get 21 seats to give it a majority of 125 seats in the 225-member parliament. President Chandrika Kumaratunga's Peoples' Alliance was projected to get 80 seats on its own while and its allies would get 20, thus giving the alliance 100 seats.
