New Delhi, Aug 11: The Supreme Court has directed the Centre to expeditiously take steps to spread knowledge among citizens about fundamental duties including them in all stages of educational curriculum. The order was passed by a bench comprising Chief Justice V N Khare, Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justice S B Sinha while disposing of a letter petition by former Chief Justice of India Ranganath Mishra, now a Member of Parliament, seeking a directive to the government educate its citizens about fundamental duties mentioned in the Constitution.
The bench, while disposing of the matter, referred to the recommendations of a committee headed by another former Chief Justice, J S Verma, which had made strong suggestions for the operationalisation of fundamental duties.
Agreeing to the suggestion of amicus curiae K Parasaran, the bench said the Central government would "take appropriate steps" for implementation of the Justice Verma committee recommendations on fundamental duties "as expeditiously as possible".

Verma committee had said that it was of the view that "the significance of the dignity of the individual in all its facets and the objective of overall development of the personality of the individual must be emphasized in the curriculum at all the stages of education.
