Sydney, Mar 14: Anti-war protesters today pelted Australian Prime Minister John Howard with eggs and tomatoes less than 24 hours after he gave a national address on the need to forcibly disarm IraqI President Saddam Hussein. Howard had just arrived at an Aboriginal Cultural Centre in the southern city of Adelaide when the protesters hurled the eggs at his government car, hitting the rear window. Police had kept the 70 protesters about 10 metres away from the entrance to the cultural centre.
Howard's personal security guards whisked him into the building after the incident.
The Prime Minister today embarked on a media offensive, defending his position on Iraq to television and radio audiences after failing to convince them of his views during a national address yesterday. In his speech, Howard argued that a failure to disarm Iraq would encourage the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, possibly into the hands of terrorists who pose a "direct, undeniable and lethal threat to Australia and its people."
But he was criticised for failing to provide evidence linking the Iraqi regime with providing weapons to terrorist organisations. Opinion polls show a large and increasing majority of Australians oppose military action against Iraq without UN approval and view North Korea as a greater security threat.
