Colombo, Sept 27: Sri Lanka was set to exchange
prisoners with Tamil Tiger guerrillas as part of measures to
build confidence amid a Norwegian bid to broker peace on the
island, officials said today.
Military authorities had finalised arrangements to free
11 members of the rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam
(LTTE) in exchange for seven members of the security forces
held by the guerrillas, officials said.
They said the swap was due to take place tomorrow at the northern town of Omanthai with the help of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
The prisoner exchange had been delayed due to legal snags in freeing some of the LTTE members who had already been charged in courts for their alleged involvement in "terrorist activities."
