The Venkataswami Commission on Friday reserved its order on former Samata Party President Jaya Jaitly's plea demanding accurate transcript of 100-hour tapes on alleged corruption in defence deals. After hearing the arguments between Jaitly's counsel Niloy Dutta, who argued that it was essential to get accurate transcript for the defence, and Tehelka's counsel Rani Jethmalani who described the plea as belated and malafide with an attempt to delay the proceedings, justice K Venkataswami said he has reserved its order on the issue.
Jaitly had claimed that the transcripts furnished by the news portal were grossly inaccurate and had demanded accurate transcripts of the contents of 100 hour tapes to enable her to rebut allegations made against her. If commission wants it can make the accurate transcript of 100 hour tapes or the news portal can do it. Even we are ready to do it. But at least there will be someone who will take the responsibility for the accuracy of the transcript which is not the case now, Dutta said.
Tehelka has the copies of both four-and-a-half hour and 100 hour transcript but to ask for a third copy was like twisting logic to absurd limits which is abuse of the process and nothing else, Jethmalani alleged. The commission also directed Tehelka to provide former BJP President Bangaru Laxman and Brig. Iqbal Singh, one of the defence personnel appearing in the expose, with copy of the released four-and-a-half-hour tapes.
