Oct 14: Everton's England teenager Wayne Rooney is poised to open talks on a new five-year contract at Goodison Park before the end of the year.
Rooney - who celebrates his 18th birthday on 24 October - signed a deal tying him to Everton until the end of the 2005/2006 season in February. Everton are keen to tie up a player rated at £30m when he was linked with Chelsea before the start of this season, and he is currently on a reported £13,000-a-week contract.
Rooney's star has risen since, as a 16-year-old, his dramatic first league goal at Goodison Park ended Arsenal's 30-match unbeaten run almost a year ago.
He became the youngster-ever England player when he made his debut against Australia, and youngest goalscorer when he scored in the win in Macedonia.

He has become a regular in coach Sven-Goran Eriksson's side and looks certain to be a key part of England's team in next summer's Euro 2004 showpiece in Portugal.
