Pakistani police in this town on the Afghanistan border moved two km past the frontier crossing, occupying about half of an area known as "no man's land." The area, a jumble of shops and some residences on the road to the Afghan town of Spinboldak, had been patrolled by Taliban fighters until the collapse of their regime.
Pakistani police and paramilitary forces took over the former Taliban passport control station at the eastern edge of the "no man's land" and hoisted the Pakistani flag. Pakistan has said the area belongs to it because Pakistani authorities withdrew from the area during the Soviet occupation of the 1980s to create a buffer zone.
Pakistani authorities have long complained that the area was used by smugglers and those trying to enter the country illegally. Pakistan encountered no resistance while occupying the area. Bureau Report
