Shillong, June 25: Suspected militants of the Achik National Volunteers Council and NSCN (I-M) ambushed a Meghalaya Police party, which was returning after an operation, killing two policemen on the spot near the Indo-Bangladesh border, top police and BSF officials said here today.
The incident occurred in the evening near Khangwai
village under Borsora Police Station in west Khasi Hills
district, about 100 km from here, when militants climbing on
trees fired indiscriminately from their automatic rifles on a
police patrol.
The circle inspector, Makarwat, and another constable were killed, a top BSF official told a news agency.
The BSF border outpost at Bagli came to know of the ambush only from civilians and sent a strong contingent of three platoons under an officer to the area.
Confirming the incident, the Director-General of Police, L Sailo, said that the ambush was suspected to be the handiwork of the ANVC and NSCN (I-M) who used AK-47 rifles.
The condition of the three injured was stated to be out of danger, he said adding that any casualty on the side of extremists was not known immediately. Sailo said that the militants fled the spot suspecting retaliatory action from the BSF side. The injured policemen were brought to the Bagli outpost and treated by the medical officer of the force before being taken to Shillong for further treatment.
