America's major chipmakers - Intel and AMD - have entered into a debate over what makes a better processor. Is it speed alone or a combination of various things?
Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) argues, while many users look at a system's processor speed, measured in megahertz (MHZ) or Gigahertz (GHZ), speed alone cannot give the complete picture.
The controversy started with Intel's new Pentium 4 processors, which run at 2 GHZ while AMD's Athlon XP operates at a speed of 1.6 GHZ. AMD claims, Pentium 4 uses a new architecture that works less efficiently than that of its slower predecessor.
Athlon XP works with the same clock speed as Pentium 4 or even a Pentium III, theoretically speaking, AMD says.
