Mumbai, July 20: North East India could play a crucial role in streamlining country's relation with the members of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) and also contribute in improving the economy of South Asia, an external affairs ministry official said here today.

"North east can play a good link with ASEAN countries", Rajiv Sikri, additional secretary (economic relations) in the ministry of external affairs, told the north east chief ministers economic summit, adding the issue could be taken up at the coming ASEAN meet in Cambodia in November. Stating that India's foreign policy has always been in consonance with the development of the country, he said "as India develops we will like to take the neighbouring countries along".

In this respect, he said, the north east region with its abundant natural resources could play a vital role.

He said India in general and the North East region in particular has tremendous market potentials and when large developing and developed countries are taking interest to use the market here "why should not our immediate neighbours take the advantage".
He said there was a need for introducing "better connectivity" between the north east region and other countries in the region and added if other countries showed interest India was willing to "sit down and discuss".
