New York, May 15: Tripp Phillips, playing what he called "the game of his life," upset American countryman Michael Chang 4-6 6-4 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals of the Forest Hills Tennis Classic.
Phillips started yesterday by completing a 4-6 6-2 7-5 victory over Oscar Hernandez of Spain. That match at the West Side Tennis Club was suspended by darkness Tuesday.
Chang, the 1989 French Open champion in his final year on the ATP tour, was hampered all week by a minor injury to his left calf, but he refused to use that as an alibi.
"It had nothing to do with it," was all Chang, 31, said as he left the court.
Phillips played deep on the clay surface to handle Chang's backhands.

"I was ready for him," he said. "That was the strategy I planned and it resulted in the game of my life."

In other second-round matches yesterday at the $50,000, 32-player event: second-seeded Ricardo Mello of Brazil defeated Andres Dellatorre of Argentina 6-3 6-4; Phillip Harboe of Chile beat no. 3 Cecil Mamiit of the United States 6-3 6-4; Giovanni Lapentti of Ecuador eliminated no. 4 Ivan Miranda of Peru 6-3 6-3; and fifth-seeded Aleq Bogomolov Jr. of the United States defeated countryman Thomas Blake 6-4 6-2.
