Guwahati, June 14: The flood situation in various parts of Assam remained grave today as torrential rains resulted in water-level rise in many rivers. The situation in the worst-hit Hailakandi and Karimganj districts in south Assam remained grave as thousands of villagers, served with a warning from the district administration, moved to safer places.
According to official sources, the villagers residing near the Longai and Kushiara rivers were asked to shift to higher areas as there was danger of the breach of embankments.
The situation was also serious in upper Assam's Dhemaji district where national highway number 52 remained under water disrupting vehicular traffic.
A portion of a railway line in the district has also been affected while nearly 150 villages were under water.
The river Jiadhol in the district was causing havoc and submerged various low-lying areas.
Elsewhere, the mighty Brahmaputra registered a rising trend following heavy rain in the catchment areas of Arunachal Pradesh.
