Dhaka, June 02: At least 20,000 Bangladeshi women and children are trafficked to neighbouring India and to Pakistan and Middle Eastern countries every year, an umbrella advocacy group charged here today.
Action Against Trafficking and Sexual Exploitation of Children, a conglomerate of 24 non-governmental organisations (NGOs), said as a developing country, Bangladesh was a prime target for traffickers.
Victims were abducted in districts bordering India, which are beset by poverty and low literacy rates.
The women and children are mostly used as sex slaves, while some are killed for organs such as kidneys, the NGOs said, while boys are often taken to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) where they are trained as camel jockeys.
UAE has assured Dhaka it will not continue to allow the practice of young boys being used as jockeys.
Human traffickers can be jailed for life in Bangladesh.
