The United Nation (UN) Patron of the Ocean Lewis Pugh, was also part of this largest beach cleaning campaign. He arrived Mumbai on Friday and joined hand with hundreds of Varsova Resident Volunteers (VRV) in the five hour drive.

This novel initiative was started in 2015, when two samaritans- Afroz Shah and (late) Harbansh Mathur— decided to do something about the dirty beach themselves, according to The Indian Express. Afroz shah said that the clean-activity has entered in its 43rd week and the volunteers are fully determined to continue their work in future.

Lewis Pugh, a global advocate for cleaner ocean and a world-class swimmer acknowledged the support of citizens and the civic body for this massive cleaning spree. “Every inch of the beach was covered in litter when we began. We picked up 673 shoes within a radius of just 10 metres. By the end of it, everyone came together with one mission, to protect our environment and make history,” he said.
