Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company (Telco) has no plan to launch any new models of Indica inspite of the fact that there is a potentially large segment of consumers at the entry level of small car. ''We do not have any plan to come out with new models at the lower segment of the market in the next 18 to 20 months though we know that there is a large market,'' said Mr Rajiv Dube, general manager of TELCO (passenger car division). Mr. Dube said that plans are a foot to launch several versions like LPG and CNG driven Indica with Euro-III environment norms to meet the requirements of consumers at home as well as abroad. It has firmed up a proposal to export Euro-III compliant 500 Indica units to Italy this month and also 2,000 air-conditioned taxi versions of Indica to Bangladesh in the next few months. The company also developed a large car version named 'Magna,' which was showcased during the auto fair last year. Mr. Dube was speaking to newspersons on Saturday after inaugurating the Telco dealership showroom cum service center ''fortune car'' at Nerul in Navi Mumbai. During the first quarter, Indica sales were up 89 per cent to 14,448 units against an industry growth of 9.8 per cent, achieving a market share of 20.6 per cent in its segment. However, Mr. Dube said that the automobile market continued to be sluggish ( 1.6 per cent), as compared to the previous year growth of 65 per cent following the entry of new models of small car from foreign companies. Overall, in the current fiscal year, the average growth of the automobile market would be in the range of 12 to 15 per cent of which Indica would position itself in the number two slot. In the year 1999-2000, the company sold about 83,000 units comprising 55,000 Indica cars and 28,000 utility vehicles. Bureau Report
