Rival US presidential candidates Vice President Al Gore and Texas Governor George W Bush called on Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic to step down, in their first head-to-head debate of the campaign.
Gore said that he was in favour of putting pressure in every way possible on Milosevic to recognise the outcome of last month's election in which the President trailed challenger Vojislav Kostunica.
“The people of Serbia have reacted very bravely in kicking these people out of office,” Gore said, adding that Milosevic had been indicted as a war criminal.
“He should be accountable for his actions,” said Gore, but ruled out the use of force to topple Milosevic.
Bush agreed that Milosevic's time was up.
It is time for the man to go. He said and called on Russia to use its sway in eastern Europe to pressure Milosevic to leave.
Official results showed Milosevic trailed by 38.62 per cent to 48.96 per cent in the presidential poll, forcing a run off election between the two on Sunday as neither won more than 50 per cent.
