High tides measuring 6.29 metres from the swollen Hooghly gushed into the metropolis on Thursday and inundated several localities prompting the authorities to maintain a state of high alert. The waters of the Hooghly rose by 6.29 m at Garden Reach following high tide, with the MET office forecasting a rise of 6.38 metres Friday afternoon. Normal life in Kalighat, Tollygunge and Alipore in the southern part of the city was disrupted with extensive areas remaining under knee deep water since noon as the Tolly Nullah overflowed.

Mayor Subrata Mukherjee told PTI that the waterlogged Nimtala crematorium in the north had to be partially shut down in the afternoon.
