Over 500 tribals gheraoed Bangiriposhi Police Station in Orissa's Mayurbhanj district for more than three hours on Wednesday in protest against alleged police attack and arrest of some inhabitants of the nearby Badamtolia village.
The tribals alleged that policemen in nine vehicles reached the village on Wednesday morning and indiscriminately attacked the villagers. Nineteen persons, including nine women, were injured in the incident.
They demanded release of innocent people arrested by the police during the search operation and payment of compensation to the injured.
The gherao on Wednesday was lifted only after the district collector and superintendent of police assured the people that an inquiry would be conducted into the incident.
The JMM MLA Sudam Marandi has condemned the incident and demanded a judicial probe into it.
