The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry (ASSOCHAM) as called for immediate steps to upgrade technology, improve maintenance, extend use of information technology and bring in fresh investment in Indian Railways to avert the series of accidents creating crisis of confidence among the commuters. In an action plan submitted to the government which deplored that no fresh technology has been injected in the Indian Railway network after the sixties, ASSOCHAM Chief Shekhar Bajaj said that technology of the 1990's was far more efficient and cost-effective.
Stressing the need for railways to embark on a high growth trajectory, he said scarce resources must be diverted to improve productivity of existing infrastructure through technology upgradation and human resource development.
ASSOCHAM also suggested improving wagon design, increasing axle load, upgrading signaling and telecommunication system and modernisating of terminals to augment safety to eliminate the possibility of human error and increase efficiency.
