India is likely to "slash" its long distance and international phone call rates soon, Communications Minister Ram Vilas Paswan said Thursday, according to a Press Trust of India report from the northern city of Dehradun. "As of now, STD (domestic long distance) and ISD (international) calls are still costly. We are working out a plan to slash ISD and STD rates further," Paswan said.
He did not detail the quantum or the likely date of the rate cut but said that such a cut would promote healthy competition among the players.

Currently, the government-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. is the dominant provider of national long distance telecommunication services even though the government opened up the national long distance communication market in August. The government-owned Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd. is the monopoly provider of International telecommunication services. Bureau Report
