Braving intense cold, an estimated 30 lakh devotees on Tuesday took a holy dip in the waters of the Sangam as the millennium`s Mahakumbh began amid tight security. Sadhus of various `akharas` thronged the banks in colourful costumes for the ritual dip shortly after midnight on the occasion of paush poornima. Mela officer Jeevesh Nandan told PTI in Kumbhnagar that about 50 lakh pilgrims were expected to take bath in the Sangam, a confluence of three rivers -- Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati. Large scale arrangements have been made on the occasion and security has been tightened at the mela area and at all entry points into the village. Bureau Report
