German-US car giant Daimler Chrysler is exploring possibilities of rolling out a small car in Asia by 2002 and eying at manufacturing plants throughout the region including India for selection as a production site. “We are looking at production capacities all over Asia for the small car project. Wherever Daimler Chrysler (DC) has a stake in any company, we are looking at it,” Managing Director and CEO of Mercedes Benz India Ltd (MBIL), the Indian subsidiary of DC, Jurgen Ziegler told reporters in Pune. He said that the parent company was working with two automobile companies Mitsubishi Motors of Japan and Hyundai Motor Company of South Korea for the so-called Asia Car Project'. “We are working with two other companies on the project, which is presently at the design stage,” Ziegler said but refused to divulge further details. DC has 34 per cent stake in Mitsubishi and 10 per cent each in Hyundai and domestic Auto Major Telco. However, Ziegler ruled out any plans to manufacture MBIL's a class' small car in India in the near future but said that the company was looking at expanding its product range. Bureau Report
