Reigning Olympic and World Champion Michael Diamond of Australia won his second consecutive gold medal on Sunday as he shot his way to a commanding victory in the men's trap. “There's no place like home, and to win in front of a home crowd is something special,” said Diamond, a minor celebrity in Australia because of the fact his gold in Atlanta was Australia's first of the 1996 games.
Briton Ian Peel took silver on Sunday while Italy's Giovanni Pellielo secured bronze, beating Kuwaiti Khaled Al Mudhaf by just one shot.

But the 28-year-old Diamond, who lives in the Sydney suburb of Hurstville, dominated throughout the competition, missing just three of the 150 targets he faced. After scoring 23 and 24 out of a possible 25 in the first two rounds of the qualifying on Saturday, Diamond went on to notch perfect scores in the final three rounds.
That gave the car radio salesman a four-target lead over Peel going into the final, virtually guaranteeing him gold.
But Diamond continued to shoot flawlessly and was able to thrust his fist into the air in victory before the final was even over. The Australian's eventual margin of victory was five points while Peel led Italy's Pellielo by a further two points.
Since making his mark at Atlanta, diamond has become the major force in trap worldwide, pushing aside the normally dominant Italians.
