Missionaries of Charity (MC) superior-general Sister Nirmala has said one of its nuns has admitted having hurt four street children in one of MC's shelters in central Calcutta.
“The sister admits her guilt with great sorrow. Her intention was to correct the children for stealing some money, but she definitely overstepped her limits,” Sister Nirmala said in a statement in Calcutta. The incident came to light when a ragpicker, father of one of the injured child, complained that the sister-in-charge of the Mahatma Gandhi Welfare Centre had burnt his daughter's hand with a hot knife.
On the basis of the complaint, a case was registered against the nun under Section 324 IPC at the Bowbazar Police Station on September 13.
On September 18, the accused was granted bail by the chief metropolitan magistrate of Alipore Court, where Sister Nirmala appeared in person. It was also clarified that the complainant had not accused Sister Nirmala in the case though she appeared in the court in connection of the bail plea of the concerned nun, Sister Fransesca, which was granted.
Stating that the Missionaries of Charity regretted the incident, Sister Nirmala, however, pointed out that the nun had given wholehearted and free service to the poor and sick children and their families. “For this, we and the poor are grateful to her.”
According to Sister Nirmala, the accused nun was unwell and resting in one of the MC houses. Bureau Report
