Indian government on Wednesday said it was actively considering' a 10-year indirect tax holiday for promoting the food processing sector and would soon come out with a Food Act. Disclosing this, secretary in the Department of Food Processing Industries (DFPI) Omesh Saigal said that the government's objective was to ensure that farmers and small scale sector units derive the benefit from this scheme. Saigal, who was addressing the international conference in cold chain infrastructure organised by Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and the IARW, said that the finance ministry is convinced of the need for granting tax holiday to the food processing sector. However, the income relief will not accrue to large entrepreneurs, he said adding it would be in the form of exemption of sales tax, octroi and excise. Bureau Report
