Muslim intellectuals have called for codification of the Muslim personal law, and an end to Shariat's ‘misinterpretation' that harmed the cause of Muslim women.
Speaking at a national colloquium held by Muslim Women's Forum In New Delhi on Saturday evening, , they also stressed the need to educate Muslim women in Islamic Laws.

Speakers, including those from Pakistan and Bangladesh, said that they felt that Shariah had given much more rights to Muslim women than what they actually enjoyed today.
They said, “The Muslim personal law board had adopted a very rigid stand in regard to the interpretation of Islamic laws in the changing circumstances while other Muslim countries had made use of the Islamic provision of ''Ijtehad'' to keep pace with the changing times.”
''One of the effective means to change this scene in favour of Muslim women is that educated and advanced Muslim women should look sack at the unprivileged lot and work for their uplift. Muslim women should know what rights Islam has given to them'', said noted Gandhian and social activist Nirmala Desh Pandey in her speech at the colloquium’s inaugural session chaired by Ms Mohini Giri, former chairperson of the National Commission for Women.
