Eminent Indian Historian Sugata Bose would take over as the third incumbent of the prestigious Gardiner Chair in Ocean History and Affairs at the Harvard University in the fall of 2001. Forty four year old Bose, who sent his acceptance of Harvard's offer recently from his parental home in Kolkata, would be one of the youngest scholars to hold a chaired professorship in the Humanities and Social Sciences at Harvard.

Before Bose, Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen spent 10 years as Lamont University professor at Harvard prior to moving back to the UK as Master of Trinity College, Cambridge. Born in Kolkata, the historian is the eldest son of Dr Sisir Kumar Bose and Parliamentarian Krishna Bose and grand nephew of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose.

Bose was educated at the St Xavier's School and Presidency College at Kolkata and topped in History Honours at Calcutta University. He obtained his PHD from the University of Cambridge and elected research fellow of St Catherine's College, Cambridge in 1981. Author of numerous path-breaking books and articles on economic, social and political history of modern Asia, his book 'The Indian Ocean Rim: An Inter-Regional Arena in the Age of Global Empire' would be published later this year.
