A clutch of 14 award-winning contemporary movies from as many European countries capturing the life and times of modern urban existence will fete the cine buffs in Calcutta in the week-long 8th 'European Union Film Festival' which begins in Calcutta on October 19. The festival is being held every alternate year since 1986 in Delhi and in one other major Indian city. This time the honour to organise the prestigious event has come to Calcutta.

Jointly presented by the 15-member European Union, the Directorate of Film Festival, New Delhi, and the West Bengal Film Centre at Nandan, the week-long festival will feature award winning movies from Portugal, France, Belgium, Germany, Ireland, Finland, Denmark, Italy, Greece, Spain, the Netherlands, the UK, Austria and Sweden with most of the moives being made between 1997 and 2000. Among the movies to be shown are Luc and Jean Piere Dardenne's Rosetta (Belgium) which had won the best film award in 1999 Cannes film festival, Gerard Krawczyk's Taxi Two (France), Teresa Villaverde's The Mutants (Portugal), Julian Farino's The Last Yellow, Andres Dresen's Night Shapes (Germany) and Gabriele Muccino's But forever in my mind (Italy).
Highlighting the salient features of the festival being held for the second time in Calcutta since 1996 when altogether 13 movies were shown, director of Nandan Angshu Sur said on Tuesday that the theme of this festival will be 'City'. All the movies to be shown this time would depict the life and times of the people in today's cities.
