Pongal, the harvest festival, was celebrated with traditional gaiety in Tamilnadu on Sunday. Special prayers and offerings were made to sun god by devotees on the day, which ushers in the auspicious 'Thai' month of the Tamil calender. People, attired in their best, celebrated the day and offered 'Sarkarai Pongal' (sweetened rice) and sugarcane, which forms part of the traditional menu for the day, to the God.
