Weightlifter Karnam Malleswari provided India their first medal, a bronze, in the 9 kg category for women at the Olympic Games on Sydney on Tuesday. The former world champion got the third position behind winner Lin Weining of China (242.5) and Erzsebet Markus of Hungary (242.5) by lifting 240 kg which included 110 in snatch and 130 in clean and jerk. Malleswari thus became the first Indian woman to win any Olympic medal and the third individual from the country to achieve the feat behind wrestler Kashaba Jadhav (Helsinki Games in 1952) and tennis star Leander Paes (Atlanta Games in 1996).
