AHMEDABAD: BJP candidate Chauhan Balrajsinh Kalyansinh defeats Congress candidate Rathod Kaminiba Bhupendrasinh from Dahegam constituency of Gujarat.

In 2012 assembly polls, Kaminiba Bhupendrasinh had defeated BJP's Thakor Rohitji Chanduji with a margin of 2297 votes.


The hill state went to polls on November 9 while elections were held in two phases in Gujarat on November 9 and 14 respectively. 68 percent polling was recorded on December 9 in the first phase of polls in 89 Assembly seats in Gujarat.


In the 2012 elections, the BJP had won 115 seats while the Congress emerged victorious on 61 seats.


The BJP has been in power in the state since 1995, winning consecutive elections in the home state of Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah. However, it was out of power for a couple of years due to party infighting and rebellion by Shankersinh Vaghela.


The saffron party came back to power in 1998 and has ruled uninterrupted since then.
