New Delhi: The festival of Diwali just left us, but the country portrays the celebratory spirit till much later. The festivity in the air is contagious!
However, there are certain pressing matters that need to be taken care of at all times. Always remember that health comes first and you need to address your health-related issues before you do anything else.
According to reports, the pollution levels post Diwali celebrations have skyrocketed to a hazardous range and this has taken health concerns to the top of the list of priorities.
Of course, you have to take care of yourself when you're out of the house, like cover your nose and/or face, etc., but what about indoor pollution? This aspect is often ignored.
How do you prevent that? Research has shown that indoor air pollution can be up to 10 times greater than outdoor pollution. Thanks to Diwali, this certainly seems to be a big problem this time, especially.
We have, therefore, compiled a list of tricks you can apply to avoid pollution indoors.
1. Keep your doors and windows closed:
This has to be the most obvious solution, but it still tops the list. Unfortunately, however, this doesn't help the matter entirely, because your house needs ventilation and in any case, pollution has other ways of making it inside the house.
2. Shower and change:
Take a shower and change into new clothes the moment you enter your house after an outing during Diwali season. The elements that contribute to pollution like dust, smoke, chemicals, etc., can cling to your hair and clothes and cause ill-health.
3. Give your bedding a hot bath:
Just like your clothes, chemicals that pollution brings inside the house can cling to your bedsheets too. So, your bedding needs to be washed in hot water every week to get rid of dust and mites, which rising pollution levels are sure to bring in.
4. Deep freeze stuffed toys:
Your child's toys, especially the stuffed ones, are always mapping the floors of your house, thereby gathering dust. All you need to do is simply slip your child's stuffed toys into a freezer bag and throw them inside the freezer for 3-5 hours. This will get rid of any dust mites that might have accumulated.
5. Use doormats with synthetic fibers:
Doormats made of natural fibers like wicker can break down and become food for mites, mold, and fungus, which enter your home with every new guest. Wash all mats on a weekly basis and/or use a shoe rack outside your house, so that your guests can take off their shoes at the door itself before entering.
Have a safe and pollution-free Diwali!
