New Delhi: Today is National Doctors' Day - a day to express our appreciation to the physicians. This observance also fulfills a need to show the doctors in our lives how important they are to us and how invaluable their treatments are that cure.
As we gratefully remember our physicians who help to save lives everday, let us take at look at some interesting facts about this special day:
- Doctor's Day is celebrated on July 1 all across India to honour the legendary physician and the second Chief Minister of West Bengal, Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy. Dr Roy was born on July 1, 1882 and died on the same date in 1962, aged 80 years. He was honoured with the country's highest civilian award, Bharat Ratna on February 4, 1961.
- The first Doctors’ Day observance was May 9th, 1933, in Winder, Georgia. However, in India, first Doctors' Day was celebrated in 1991.
- Historically, a card or red carnation may be sent to physicians and their spouses, along with a flower being placed on the graves of deceased physicians.
