Centre has time till October 2 to repeal farm laws, warns BKU leader Rakesh Tikait

Farmers` unions protesting against the government`s three new agriculture laws executed the nationwide `chakka jam` on Saturday. Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Rakesh Tikait said that they will not hold discussions with the Centre under pressure.

New Delhi: Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Rakesh Tikait reiterated on Saturday (February 6, 2021) that the central government has time till October 2 to repeal the three farm laws failing which the farmers will intensify their ongoing agitation against the controversial laws. 

The influential BKU leader made these remarks on a day when the farmer unions held a countrywide ‘chakka jam’ to protest against the Centre’s farm laws.

“We have given time to the government till 2nd October to repeal the laws. After this, we will do further planning. We won't hold discussions with the government under pressure,” Tikait was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

It may be recalled that Rakesh Tikait had earlier said that there won’t be any ''chakka jam'' in Delh-NCR, UP and Uttarakhand since all the protest sites are already in a ‘chakka jam’ mode.

Although the protests were mostly peaceful, it also saw the detention of some of the demonstrators as the police tried to clear the roads for traffic movement.

The "chakka jam" protest was more effective in rural parts, where a high number of farmers came out and cooked food on the roads, while some activists sang patriotic songs as well as sang devotional songs to keep the agitators engaged
