New Delhi: The Delhi Police on Sunday (July 26, 2020) arrested a man for duping a woman, who he had met on a matrimonial site on the pretext of marriage, of Rs 17 lakh.

According to the police, the man identified as Mudit Chawla alias Anchit Chawla alias Amarjit Singh has duped several women in the past. He regularly changed his name and location to avoid being caught. 


The fraudster has also cheated people in in the name of getting a government job and tender by pretending to be an officer of the Home Ministry and PMO. 


DCP of North West Delhi Vijayanta Arya said, "The man has been identified as Mudit Chawla. A woman had filed a complaint that she had come in contact with him through a matrimonial website shaadi.com and he duped her of Rs 17 lakh after befriending her."


The accused started asking her for money by making up different excuses. On the pretext of marriage, he took a total of Rs 17 lakh from the girl through cash and personal loan. However, when it came to a decision of marriage, he backed out. After which she approached the police.


"We have come to know that he was arrested on four different occasions earlier in connection with four cases of similar nature. He changes his name and address regularly," DCP Arya added.


The accused told the police that he has been cheating people by telling them that he will get them a government tender, government job and pretending to be an officer of PMO and Home Ministry.


The police have also seized the man`s ID cards and Aadhaar cards with different names from his possession. Several cases have been registered against him in Dwarka, Najafgarh, Vasant Vihar and Hauz Khas.
