Excise Policy Scam: Supreme Court Grants Interim Bail To Arvind Kejriwal Challenging ED Arrest
The Supreme court has granted interim bail to the Delhi Chief Minister in an excise policy case.
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday scheduled to deliver its verdict on Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's plea challenging his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with a money laundering case linked to the excise policy scam. Now, the top court has granted interim bail to the Delhi Chief Minister in an excise policy case. The Apex Court referred his petition challenging his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to a larger bench. But the Chief Minister remained in custody as his bail in the CBI case is still pending.
A bench led by Justice Sanjiv Khanna referred Arvind Kejriwal's petition challenging his arrest by the ED to a larger bench. Granting interim bail in the ED case, the Supreme Court noted that the Delhi Chief Minister has suffered incarceration of 90 days and it's conscious that he is an elected leader.
CM Kejriwal's lawyer Rishikesh Kumar said, "The Supreme Court has granted him interim bail and the issue of section 19 and necessity of arrest has been referred to a larger bench. CM Kejriwal will remain in custody as his bail in the CBI case is still pending. This is a big victory..."
On May 17, the bench, comprising Justice Dipankar Datta, had concluded a hearing and reserved judgment on Kejriwal's petition. Earlier, on April 17, the SC asked response from the ED on Kejriwal’s plea against his arrest in the Delhi excise policy case.
