Five years after the abrogation of contentious Article 370, the people of Jammu and Kashmir are set to get their elected representatives once again. The Election Commission of India (ECI) announced the dates for Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections on August 16. Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar addressed a press conference to announce the schedule for the General Election to Legislative Assemblies.

The Union Territory will go to the polls in three phases starting September 18. The counting of votes will be done on October 4.


There are a total of 87.09 lakh voters in Jammu and Kashmir, of which 44.46 lakh are males, 42.62 lahks are females, 3.71 lahks are first-time voters and 20.7 lakh are young voters. The final voter list will be published on August 20.


Voting is scheduled to take place in three phases in Jammu and Kashmir for its 90 Assembly seats.

The ECI announced the poll dates after the Supreme Court of India set a deadline for the poll body to conduct assembly elections before September.
