In the latest epidemiological update on Friday, the UN health body reported over 850,000 new cases worldwide in the 28-day period from November 20 to December 17.
The number of new deaths decreased by 8 per cent as compared to the previous 28-day period, with over 3,000 new fatalities reported. As of December 17, over 772 million confirmed cases and nearly seven million deaths have been reported globally.

The new Covid infections in India surged by 423 cases in the last 24 hours. Of these, 266 cases were registered in Kerala and 70 in Karnataka. In the last 24 hours, five new cases of Covid were reported in Delhi as well. With this, the total active cases in India has climbed to 3420 while four more deaths have been reported in the last 24 hours- two from Kerala, one from Karnataka and one from Rajasthan.

A 19-year-old student, who recently arrived in the city of Jodhpur from Australia, has tested positive for Covid-19. The decision to undergo testing was prompted by the onset of mild symptoms, including cold, coughing, and sneezing. The student is being quarantined at her residence, reports PTI.
Medical teams have taken samples from the student's 10 family members who had been in contact with her. According to officials, the student is experiencing only mild symptoms, and she has been isolated at home.

The JN.1 is a variant of the ‘pirola’ variant BA 2.86. The World Health Organization has classified JN.1 as a variant of interest. IMA COVID Task Force Dr Rajeev Jayadevan on December 21 mentioned that the new strain can be problematic for people of old age and those with multiple comorbidities.
