Gujarat civic polls: BJP sweeps all six municipal corporations

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) swept all six municipal corporations in Gujarat on Tuesday (February 23, 2021). The ruling party won 483 out of the total 576 seats. It retained power in all the six municipal corporations in the state -- Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot, Jamnagar and Bhavnagar.

  • AIMIM wins 8 seats in Ahmedabad, 4 each in Jamalpur and Maktampura.

    Notably, AAP had fielded 470 candidates across six corporations and won eight seats in Surat.

  • So far, the trends are available for 405 seats out of the total 576 seats. Bharatiya Janata Party is leading on 337, Congress 42 while Aam Aadmi Party on 22 seats.

     

  • After Rajkot, Bhavnagar and Jamnagar, BJP wins Vadodara civic body.

     

  • In Surat on 120 seats, BJP has so far won 51, while AAP 17. Congress has not opened its account yet.

     

  • AAP opened its account in the municipal corporation election in Surat by winning all seats in Ward 2 (Amroli-Mota Varachha), 4 (Kapodra) and 16 (Puna West).

  • The Congress has won in 12 seats and is leading in four. It has retained Dariyapur, its bastion in eastern Ahmedabad, and also won in all four wards in Danilinda.

  • The BJP, which won 32 seats and is leading in six in Ahmedabad so far, has retained all four seats in Khokhra ward. It also won all four seats in the Gota ward.

     

  • While AAP is ahead in 11 seats, Others have maintained the lead on 15-20 seats.

  • The ruling BJP is ahead in 263 seats, Congress in 50 while Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP is going strong in 11 seats, hours after counting of votes for 576 seats in 144 wards across six civic bodies in Gujarat began on Tuesday.

  • Nine candidates are also in the fray for by-elections to two seats in the Junagadh Municipal Corporation.

  • After the results are announced today, elections to 31 district and 231 taluka panchayats and 81 municipalities will be held on 28 February.

  • A total of 2,276 candidates, comprising 577 from the BJP, 566 from the Congress, 470 from AAP, 91 from NCP, 353 from other parties, and 228 Independents, contested the local body elections in Gujarat.

  • During the poll campaign, the BJP played the "development" card, while Congress, which has been out of power in these local bodies for a long time now, cited the "lack of amenities" and the recent fuel price hike to turn the tide.

  • The main contest is between the BJP, which has ruled the six corporations for last several terms, and the main Opposition Congress. 

  • The civic body elections are being seen as a test for the Rupani government as it may set the tone for the Assembly polls slated for next year.

  • Top leaders of the BJP, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP MP Kirit Solanki, party MLA Rakesh Shah and Gujarat party chief CR Paatil, had cast their votes on Sunday. Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani also cast his vote in Rajkot, hours after testing negative for COVID-19.

  • All these civic bodies are currently being ruled by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

  • The six municipal corporations that went to polls on Sunday are - Ahmedabad, Surat, Rajkot, Vadodara, Bhavnagar and Jamnagar.

  • The counting of votes will start at 9 am on Tuesday.

While the main opposition Congress could only get 55 seats, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) put up an impressive show and bagged 27 seats, all in Surat. The Asaduddin Owaisi-led All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), which contested local body polls in Gujarat for the first time, won 7 seats in Ahmedabad's Jamalpur and Maktampura wards.

Three candidates of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) won in Jamnagar, while an independent candidate won in Ahmedabad.
