COVID-19: Positive cases in Tamil Nadu cross 10000, state records 71 deaths

As the deadly coronavirus infection spread further in various states to push the nationwide tally to 78,003, the government on Thursday unveiled special measures amounting to over Rs 3 lakh crore for migrant workers, farmers and other segments of the economy to help them tide over the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • As of 8 pm, total positive cases in Gujarat reached 9,932 and death toll at 606.

  • Tamil Nadu has seen its total COVID-19 case count surpass 10,000. Tamil Nadu currently has 10108 total cases of which 7435 are active. There are a total of 5946 cases recorded in Chennai, of which 5114 are active. The state has so far seen 71 deaths and 2,599 recoveries. 

  • West Bengal: With 84 new cases, the total number of positive cases reach 2,461. The death toll in 24 hours stand at 10 and total deaths have reached 153. A total of 829 people have been discharged so far.

  • Mumbai's biggest hotspot Dharavi records 84 new cases taking the total number of coronavirus positive patients to 1,145. A total of 53 deaths have been reported so far.

  • Karnataka: New 69 cases have been reported in the last 24 hours. Total active cases stand at 539, total discharges at 480. The death toll has reached 36. Total positive cases 1056.

  • Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray has called a meeting regarding lockdown in the state. NCP president Sharad Pawar, Maharashtra ministers Jayant Patil and Aditya Thackeray and officials arrived at the meeting.

  • With 33 new coronavirus positive cases in a day in Kalyan Dombivali metropolitan area near Mumbai, total cases rise to 424.

  • Two more CISF personnel from Kolkata test positive for COVID-19. One is from GRSE and the other is from the Indian Museum unit. Total 39 active cases among CISF personnel in Kolkata.

  • A train from Nashik will leave for Lucknow today carrying migrant workers. The 'Shramik' Special train will leave at 8 pm taking about 1400 workers from Sinnar area of ​​Nashik. This will be the fourth train for migrant workers from Nashik.

  • In Rajasthan till 2 pm, 154 new positive cases were registered. The total figure of coronavirus positive so far is 4,688 in the state. A total of 2,677 people have recovered. Total death toll in Rajasthan is 125.

     

  • Assam: The government of Assam has written to the Centre urging it to extend the coronavirus COVID-19 lockdown by two more weeks beyond May 17. Confirming this, Assam Chief Minister CM Sarbananda Sonowal said, “We have sent our written recommendation that we want this lockdown to be continued.’’

  • Mangalore: Migrants laborers from Bihar and Jharkhand stage protest outside Mangalore town hall demanding for a train to go back to their home state. The protestors have also threatened that until they get a solution they will not leave the protest spot.

  • Madhya Pradesh: With 61 new cases in last 24 hours, the COVID-19 count in Madhya Pradesh's Indore district has risen to 2,299, while two more patients have succumbed to the infection, says health official, (PTI  info)

  • GoM meets over COVID-19 situation: Today 15th meeting of GoM ( Group of Ministers) was held on COVID-19. Discussions were done on the country's progress so far to counter the virus spread and further measures to be taken to combat the threat.

  • Karnataka: 45 new cases reported in the state, total tally rises to 1032 which includes 520 active cases, 476 recovered cases, and 35 deaths. 

  • Bihar: Number of cases cross 1000 as 6 more COVID-19 cases get reported taking the total tally to 1005.

  • Maharashtra: 1061 personnel of Maharashtra Police including 112 police officers have been tested positive for COVID-19 so far.

  • High Court seeks Delhi govt stand on pleas challenging levy of 70 percent special corona fee on liquor. (Read here)

  • Delhi High Court on liquor: The Delhi HC on Friday sought the response of the AAP government on several pleas challenging the levy of 70 percent "special corona fee'' on the MRP of all liquor brands in the national capital. (PTI input)

  • Goa: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has suggested that the Railways cancel the halt of special trains at Madgaon as fresh coronavirus cases surface in the state, after a gap of more than a month. (PTI info)

  • Nepal: 9 more new cases confirmed in Nepal. Country's toll at 258 as per the Nepal Health Ministry data.

  • Shramik Trains: 145 Shramik trains carrying 2.10 lakh passengers operated till date since May 1, says, Ministry of Railway.

  • Odisha: 61 new cases reported from the state, the total tally stands at 672 which includes 158 discharged and 3 deaths.

  • Rajasthan: 55 positive cases reported till 9 am on Friday taking the total tally to 4,589. Death toll at 125.

  • India COVID-19 data:  3967 new cases, 100 deaths reported in the last 24 hours. The recovery rate stands at 34.06 percent. 

  • Uttar Pradesh: Out of the 708 samples tested on Thursday for COVID-19, results of 7 are positive, reports King George's Medical University (KGMU), Lucknow. (ANI input)

  • India COVID-19 data: Total number of coronavirus cases in India rises to 81,970  which includes 51,401 active cases, 27,919 recovered cases, 1 migrant patient and 2,649 deaths as per Ministry of Health data.

  • Uttarakhand: The portals of Badrinath Temple opened at 4:30 am today. 28 people including the Chief Priest was present at the temple when its portals opened.

  • Special Train: First special train to Kerala from Delhi reached Thiruvananthapuram Railway Station with 602 passengers on Friday.

  • Rajasthan: Death toll due to coronavirus in the state rises to 125 with 4 more deaths; tally 4,534 after 206 new cases, including 59 in Udaipur, 36 in Jodhpur, 22 in Jalore, 20 in Jaipur & 17 in Nagaur districts; active cases 1,771. (PTI input)

FM Sitharaman said, "Farmers and workers are the backbones of this nation. They serve all of us with their sweat and toil. Migrant workers need affordable and convenient rental housing in urban areas in addition to social security. There is also a need to create employment opportunities for the poor, including migrant and unorganised workers. Farmers need timely and adequate credit support."


The death toll crossed 2,500, while more than 27,000 have recovered so far. Large numbers of cases continued to get reported in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and the national capital.
