Maharashtra COVID-19 tally rises to 44,582 after highest daily spike of 2,940 cases

As India relaxes the lockdown measures imposed country-wide to stop the spread of the novel coronavirus, India`s number of COVID-19 positive cases too see a spike.

  • The tickets for the 15 pairs of special trains running on Rajdhani routes will now be available 30 days in advance and can be bought at reservation counters at railway stations. Earlier, the tickets could be booked only on the IRCTC website.

  • 40 more people test COVID-19 positive in Jammu and Kashmir; total number of cases rises to 1,489.

  • Twenty more people tested positive for COVID-19 in Assam, taking the total number of cases to 230, state Health and Family Welfare Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said. All the new COVID-19 patients were already lodged at different quarantine centres in Guwahati, Tezpur, Jorhat and Silchar.

  • China has reported 39 new coronavirus cases, including 35 asymptomatic infections from the first COVID-19 epicentre in Wuhan which is currently testing all of its 11.2 million population to prevent a second wave of infection. China's National Health Commission (NHC) said that out of the thirty-nine infections reported on Thursday, 35 were asymptomatic cases.

  • A COVID-19 positive patient died in Gurgaon on Friday, taking the number of fatalities in Haryana to 16 as 37 new coronavirus cases surfaced in the state, officials said. The total number of cases reported in the state has reached 1,067, a Health Department bulletin said.

  • With migrant workers facing trouble to book tickets online amid the ongoing lockdown, the Delhi Police has stepped in and 38 labourers were sent to their native places through "Shramik Special" trains with help from the police, officials said.

  • Maharashtra recorded 2,940 new coronavirus patients, the highest one-day spike so far, taking the overall tally in the state to 44,582, health officials said. As per the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, 1,751 new cases were found in the state capital Mumbai.

    30 lakh PPE kits and N95 masks have been supplied to states. There has not been much requirement of ventilators as we had assumed earlier.

    At least five states have reported 80 per cent of total COVID-19 deaths in the country. 10 states have total 90 per cent of COVID-19 cases and five cities have over 60 per cent of total cases.

  • 78,183 deaths averted due to lockdown: Govt

    The government said on Friday said that 36-70 lakh cases could have erupted in the country and almost 78,183 deaths would have been reported if the lockdown had not been implemented.

  • Coronavirus doubling rate stands at 13 days 

    At the beginning of the lockdown, the doubling rate of the cases was 4, but today, it is doubling in 13.3 days, sais VK Paul.

  • 1 crore people treated under Ayushman Bharat

    VK Paul, Chairman of the empowered group, said that treatment and hospitalisation of 1 crore beneficiaries of Ayushman Bharat Yojna has been done. He said 40,000 health and welfare centres commissioned till date.

  • Mortality rate drops in India: 

    In daily briefing on Covid-19 situation in India, the health ministry said that the mortality rate in India dropped from 3.13 per cent to 3.02 per cent.

  • Five people tested positive for COVID-19 in Uttarakhand, bringing the number of cases to 151 in the state, according to a state health department bulletin.

    Three fresh cases were reported from Dehradun and two from Udham Singh Nagar district, the bulletin said.

  • A 50-year-old Assistant Sub-Inspector of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has succumbed to novel coronavirus, officials said.

    Healthcare workers at several Central and Delhi government hospitals sported black armbands on Friday to protest the government's decision to end the need for their quarantine after COVID-19 duty unless there has been any form of high-risk exposure.

  • Auto, cycle rickshaws to return to roads in Tamil Nadu; no relaxation for Chennai. The vehicles would be allowed to ply only between 7am and 7pm; but will not be permitted to operate in Containment zones across the state.

  • The Maharashtra government has come out with three slabs on per day charges on treatment of COVID-19 patients in private and charitable hospitals and also decided to regulate rates for 80 per cent of the operational bed capacity in these medical facilities.

  • The ruling Shiv Sena on said the Maharashtra BJP's agitation against the Uddhav Thackeray-led government during the COVID-19 pandemic will boomerang on the opposition party. An editorial in the party mouthpiece 'Saamana' slammed state BJP president Chandrakant Patil for comparing the Maha Vikas Aghadi government's handling of the pandemic with Kerala's model.

     

  • A 75-year-old woman from Kerala, who had returned from Mumbai recently, died of coronavirus infection after which she was buried at a mosque near here in strict compliance with the prescribed protocol.

  • BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis led the opposition party's state-wide protest against the failure of the Shiv Sena-headed Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government to curb the coronavirus spread in Maharashtra.

  • Andhra reports 62 new COVID-19 cases: 

    Andhra Pradesh reported 62 new cases that were detected in the last 24 hours. The state's tally of positive cases till date stands at 2,514, while there are 728 active cases that are receiving treatment in various hospitals.

  • Karnataka reports 105 new cases: 

    Karnataka reports 105 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, taking its tally to 1,710. With 17 new recoveries, total of 588 people have so far been recovered in the state. The active cases in the state are 1,080 and the death toll is at 41.

  • Karnataka allows weddings on full lockdown Sundays

    In a relief to hundreds of brides and bridegrooms in Karnataka, the state government allowed their wedding on Sundays, which will otherwise see full lockdown.

  • Karnataka begins inter-state train services. The train, which runs for thrice a week from Bangalore to Belagavi, left for 338 passengers on Friday.

  • Nine new COVID-19 patients in Gautam Buddh Nagar; cases cross 300-mark

    Nine more people, including two employees of a Chinese phone manufacturing firm, tested positive for coronavirus in Uttar Pradesh's Gautam Buddh Nagar on Thursday, as COVID-19 cases in the district crossed the 300-mark.

    Also, two patients were discharged after they recovered from the disease, taking the number of active cases in the district to 88, the officials said.

    India registered some 6,000 new cases of the novel coronavirus on May 22, the country`s biggest jump in 24 hours, as New Delhi eases a nationwide lockdown and airlines prepare to resume some domestic flights.
     
    The country of 1.3 billion people reported a total of over 118,000 confirmed cases on Friday, a roughly 5% increase from Thursday`s figures. Included in the total are 3,583 deaths.

On Friday, India reported as many as 1,18,447 COVID-19 cases which include 48,534 cured cases and 3,583 fatalities. The highest spike has been registered by Maharashtra, which alone accounts for nearly 35 percent of Covid-19 cases and over 41 percent deaths due to the virus.

Meanwhile, domestic passenger flight services will resume from May 25, the Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said on Wednesday. Private airlines have started taking bookings for flight services from May 25.

The Indian Railways too has started accepting the booking of tickets for Special trains that will run from June 1. The ticket booking for these commenced from 10 am on May 21.
