India coronavirus, COVID-19 live updates, May 27: 2,190 new COVID-19 cases in 24 hours take Maharashtra`s total number to 56,948

The nationwide tally of Covid-19 cases crossed 1.51 lakh on Wednesday with states like Bihar, West Bengal, Assam and Odisha reporting a significant rise in their numbers amid the large-scale return of migrant workers from other states.

  • More than 62,000 new COVID-19 global cases in last 24 hrs; active count increases to 29.16 lakh.
     

  • Jammu and Kashmir: 162 new positive cases reported in the UT today while 21 recovered. The total number of positive cases in the UT rose to 1,921, including 854 recovered and 26 deaths.

  • West Bengal: 183 new cases were reported today. The total number of cases in the state is now at 4,192.

  • Maharashtra: 2,190 new cases reported in the last 24 hours in the state. The total number of COVID-19 patients surged to 56,948. There were around 105 new deaths in the last 24 hours. The death count increased to 1,897. There were 964 recoveries in the state today that took the total number of recoveries to 17,918. 

    Mumbai: City's total count jumped to 34,018, while the toll surged to 1,097. In Dharavi, there were 18 new cases. Dharavi's total has increased to 1,639. 
     

  • Jharkhand: 7 new cases reported today - 5 in Hazaribagh, 1 in Latehar and 1 in Chaibasa. The total number of positive cases in Jharkhand jumped to 444.
     

  • Tamil Nadu: 817 cases reported today. Total surged to 18,545; active - 8,500. Around 567 discharged today; 9909 total. 6 deaths today took the death count to 133.

    Chennai: 558 today; total - 12,203; active - 6307.
     

  • Karnataka: Today’s Discharges - 17, Total Discharges - 781. New Cases Reported - 135. Total Active Cases - 1588. Today’s COVID-19 Deaths - 03. Total COVID-19 Deaths - 47.

  • Kerala: 40 new cases reported in the state today. Of these, 9 returned from abroad, 16 returned from Maharashtra, 5 from Tamil Nadu, and 3 from Delhi. The total number of positive cases in the state touched 1004, of which 445 are active cases.

  • Himachal Pradesh: Total cases now stand at 251, including 177 active cases, 65 recovered patients, and 5 deaths.

The numbers also rose further in the worst-hit states including Maharashtra, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu, while Delhi, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, among other states and union territories, also reported more new cases.


Addressing media persons, Lav Agarwal, Joint Secretary in Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, said, "India's recovery rate is steadily improving from 7.1% in March to 41.6% today. Our COVID-19 fatality rate is among the lowest in the world: It has reduced from 3.3% to 2.87% today." 


As domestic airlines start their operation several states on Tuesday announced mandatory institutional quarantine on arrival for all to control the fresh spike in cases created by the mass movement.
