Tripura Election Result 2023: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won an absolute majority in the Tripura Assembly elections as the results were announced on Thursday. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 32 seats with a vote share of almost 39%. Tipra Motha Party emerged as the second-largest party with 13 seats. Congress won three seats, while the Communist Party of India (Marxist) received 11 seats. By winning one seat, the Indigenous People's Front of Tripura (IPFT) was able to establish itself. CPI(M) and Congress continued to have a combined vote share of almost 33 percent.
In 2018, the state saw a historic change in power when after 20 years, the Left Front government lost the top job in the state to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)- People's Front of Tripura (IPFT) combine. With the 2024 Lok Sabha Election just a year away, the BJP retained its hold on this small but crucial state in the northeast.
The BJP had contested for 55 seats and its ally, IPFT, in six seats. But both allies had fielded candidates in the Ampinagar constituency in the Gomati district. The Left contested in 47 and Congress in 13 seats, respectively. Of the total 47 seats, the CPM contested 43 seats while the Forward Bloc, Communist Party of India (CPI) and Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP) contested one seat each.
The CPI(M)-led Left Front ruled the state for nearly four decades, with a gap between 1988 and 1993, when the Congress was in power but now both parties joined hands with the intention to oust BJP from power. However, that plan came to nought with BJP managing to hold on to power in the state.
