Tamil Nadu Train Accident: 12 Coaches of Mysore-Darbhanga Express Derail, 4 AC Compartments Catch Fire
Mysuru-Darbhanga Express met with an accident near Kavarapettai Railway Station in the Chennai Division, causing derailment of at least two coaches.
Atleast 12 to 13 coaches of the Mysore-Darbhanga Bagmati Express derailed on Friday after crashing into a stationary goods train at Kavarapettiyil in Chennai, news agency ANI cited CPRO South Western Railway as saying. While there were no immediate reports of casualties, injuries are suspected, as four of the derailed coaches caught fire following the accident.
“Train no. 12578 passed Ponneri at 20:27 hours. The crew experienced a heavy jerk, and the train entered the loop line and collided with stabbled goods train in the loop line... No casualty and a few injured,” a statement by the railways read.
Videos and pictures circulating on social media showed flames beneath one of the affected coaches, with passengers being rescued in dramatic scenes captured on camera. The quick response of local residents, along with police and Fire Department personnel, played a crucial role in the initial rescue efforts after the collision.
Local sources indicated that nearby hospitals in Kavaraipettai have been placed on high alert to manage any potential emergencies arising from the incident. Fortunately, Southern Railway officials stated that no serious injuries to passengers were reported at this time.
The Mysore-Darbhanga Express operates between Darbhanga Junction in Bihar and Mysuru Junction in Karnataka, serving as an important link for passengers traveling between the two regions. Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the accident and assessing the situation. More details are expected to emerge as rescue operations continue and officials gather information.
