SRINAGAR: Security forces on Thursday launched a cordon and search operation in as many as13 villages of Shopian district.

Police said the Rashtriya Rifles, the Special Operations Group (SOG) of the state police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) undertook the operation.


More than the objective of targeting militants, these operations are aimed at "area domination" so as to keep the militants on the run and to prevent them from establishing a base in heavily populated areas.


On Monday, three terrorists were gunned down and a jawan was martyred in an encounter between the security forces and terrorists in J&K's Pulwama district.


The gunbattle took place in Pulwama's Aglar Kandi.


A day earlier, the Indian Army foiled a major infiltration bid and killed two terrorists in an encounter Uri sector of north Kashmir's Baramulla district.
