“They (Army men) can pick any woman and rape her, nobody has the right to question”, Balakrishnan said, adding the situation was same in each state where the Army had been deployed.

The CPI(M) leader didn't stop here. He further said, “They (Army) can do anything to anybody. If they see more than four people standing together, they can shoot them.”

“If the Army is deployed in Kannur, there would be a clash between soldiers and people,” Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said.

In the recent times, the politically-volatile Kannur has been witnessing deadly clashes between the BJP/RSS and CPI(M) cadre.

The BJP has been claiming that attacks on its cadres have increased since the CPI(M)-led LDF government came to power.

Balakrishnan's controversial statements come after state BJP leadership called on Governor P Sathasivam and sought the imposition of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) in Kannur.

Angry with the 'political killings' in Kannur district, Leader of Opposition Ramesh Chennithala had also said that AFSPA was imposed in the Northeast for a specific reason.

"Please check on facts and for information a few stray incidents that took place there should not be generalised. You can find for yourselves how AFSPA helped the people there," said Chennithala.
