  • Exit polls have predicted that the Trinamool will retain power, with different agencies putting the majority figure ranging from a slender 155 to a huge 253 in the 294-member house.

  • Chief Election Commissioner Nasim Zaidi notes that there was widespread use of black money in Tamil Nadu during Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Election 2016. With the help of surveillance and flying squads, the authorities were able to seize more than Rs 110 crores, adds Zaidi.

  • The counting of votes will decide the fate of approximately 8,300 candidates including Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi in Assam and CM contender BJP's Sarbananda Sonowal and Himanta Biswas, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa and Karunandhi in Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, CPI(M) leaders VS Achutanandan and Pinarayi Vijayan in Kerala, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and CPI(M) Suryakanta Mishra in West Bengal and Chief Minister M Rangaswamy in Puducherry.

Not just Assam, Congress may lose Kerala too. DMK has been tipped to regain power defeating AIADMK in Tamil Nadu. Only West Bengal seems to have bucked the trend in exit polls by re-electing Trinamool Congress led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who managed to hold on to power by defeating the Left-Congress alliance convincingly for a second consecutive term. In Union Territory of Puducherry, the Congress could take solace from its projected victory in alliance with the DMK.

  • Counting of votes will commence at 8 am and end by 3 pm.

  • First trends are expected to be available after an hour. By 12 noon, a clear picture could emerge on the winners.

  • Just a few more hours and the wait will be over. Counting of votes in the Assembly Elections in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Assam, Kerala and Puducherry will be taken up on Thursday morning.

West Bengal's ruling Trinamool Congress on Thursday crushed the Opposition and Tamil Nadu's AIADMK proved exit polls wrong by retaining power in Assembly elections. On the other hand, the BJP stormed to power in Assam while the Left made a comeback in Kerala amid a washout in West Bengal.
