  • The Congress under Ibobi SIngh has maintained that during its 15-year rule it had implemented key development projects and significantly improved the power supply.

  • Sharmila had broken her 16-year fast - to get the controversial Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act repealed - last year  and floated a party of her own -- the 'Peoples' Resurgence and Justice Alliance' to fight the Assembly elections.

  • The state has a 19,02,562-strong electorate comprising of 9,28,573 male and 9,73,989 female voters. There are around 45,642 new voters this time.

  • The biggest contest is between Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh and rights activist-turned politician Irom Chanu Sharmila in Thoubal constituency.

  • Key polls issues:

    1. Continuing economic blockade by the United Naga Council and the state government's inability to lift it.

    2. Alleged lack of development, corruption, and worsening law and order situation in the state.

  • The election in Manipur is a crucial test for the 15-year-old Congress regime which is facing a stiff challenge from the BJP.

  • Manipur recorded one of its highest ever voting percentages in an election at 86%. The state had recorded overall 79.80 per cent turnout in 2012.

  • Manipur had polled in two phases – March 4 and March 11.
