New Delhi: In a shocking incident, a Mumbai-based youth on Saturday was caught on camera stroking a stray dog with an iron rod.

The incident took place in the compound of Rizvi building in Kalina. The accused, a 24-year-old, has been identified as Haroon Khan, a resident of the same building.


The stray dog 'Dabbu', who have been admitted to a nearby hospital for vets, is said to be in a critical condition after the beating and has reportedly suffered a skull fracture.


Resident Surekha Kharat, 52, an animal lover, witnessed the brutal incident. She cross-checked the CCTV footage to find the 24-year-old hitting the stray dog on its head with an iron rod.


As per a report, Dabbu was quietly passing by when the accused picked up an iron rod and started beating the animal mercilessly. The dog soon collapsed and was rushed to Parel Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).


Following the incident, the local residents identified the accused and thrashed him for cruely assaulting the dog.


"We feed Dabbu every day and he is friendly. We rushed the dog to a veterinary clinic for treatment and later shifted him to SPCA at Parel," said Kharat.


Dattatray Khade, Police Sub Inspector, Vakola police station said, "During an investigation, we found that the accused had hit the stray dog with an iron rod. We arrested the accused under section 429 (Mischief by killing or maiming cattle) of the IPC and under relevant sections of the Prevention of Animals to Cruelty Act.
