Tezpur: An Assam Police constable was killed and two civilians were injured when a mob attacked a police team which was on way to recover stolen goods in Biswanath Chariali of Sonitpur district.

"One Assam Police battalion havildar was killed and two civilians were injured in a clash between police and a mob at Baghmari area under Biswanath Chariali police station in Sonitpur district last night," Assam Police DIG (Northern Range) Subrajyoti Hazarika said.


On specific information, a police team reached Baghmari to recover some stolen materials of Power Grid Corporation's newly constructed office after a complaint was lodged by the company.


 


"The villagers did not allow the team to enter the locality. Suddenly, some unruly villagers attacked the police team and one havildar of 11th Assam Police Battalion was killed due to head injury.The police later resorted to blank fire to disperse the mob," Hazarika said.


The OC of Jinjia police station was seriously injured along with two villagers in the attack and all of them have been admitted at Biswanath Chariali Civil Hospital, he added.


Senior police and district administration officials have rushed to the spot this morning to assess the situation.
